Mrs.Mejia! asked:
I don’t exactly know what I’m doing when it comes to gardening. My yard is bare and I would like to plant some substantial plants around my house, some kind of shrub. Besides a hedge, what is something I can plant and won’t kill easily? I really like the tropical look like palms…. an ideas?
….and are cheap, working on a tight budget
I live in Mississippi

I need to know where you live, to give you a good answer. You either live in zone 7 or 8. Depending how far south you are. I live in zone 7 and have tried a few palms that are suppossed to be hardy in that zone but they never quite look right. I would stay away from palms unless you live on the coast itself. Saying that there are some nice shrubs that will give you great color and will be hardy in both zones. Please do not plant a hedge, they are outdated and not a pretty look. Crepe myrtles come in various sizes and colors and our very hardy. Texas sage, indian hawthorne, nandina’s, lobelia are a few shrubs that you can use around your house that will bloom at different times and have different heights. If budget is a concern, buy one gallon plants and just wait a little longer for the fuller look.

Do you live in a tropical area. I live in Northern Alabama and palms won’t winter over. Plus they are kinda expensive. Encore Azaleas are beautiful - they bloom all summer- unlike regular azaleas. Also the pencil cypress are pretty but they can get expensive
