Where is the best place to plant trees and shrubs in my yard?

November 10th, 2007 by admin

Amix76 asked:

I heard that shrubs like to be planted next to houses and in a certain direction in relation to the house to minimize exposure to wind. I just don’t remember what direction that is. I haven’t had much success with my shrubs to this point and I’ve amended the soil.

It totally depends on where you are located in the U.S of A. You can always look on various web sites for help with what , when and where to plant in your area. Gardners.com is a good place to start. And look up at the sky to see which direction your sun is coming from.
    Good luck and have fun.

Depending on the shrub, if it is a fern or some kind of shrub that is known to grow under forest floors then it should be planted in the shade. As far as trees go you should almost always try to find a sunny place or a place with lots of morning sun, most trees are canopy makers so its best for them to be planted in the sun. Hope this info helps.

Some shrubs are particular in cold climates; boxwood and rhododendrons are notorious. They should be planted away from prevailing winds, and an eastern exposure is ideal for them.
But there are a huge variety of shrubs that should be amenable to even a western exposure to your home. Your best bet is to visit a local nursery (NOT the local WalMart) and find an employee who is actually capable of assisting you in finding hardy shrubs for your conditions.

It really depends on the type of shrub or tree it is. There is no one rule that fits all shrubs and trees. Look up the specific trees or shrubs you wish to plant online and go from there. There are many great resources on gardening to be found online.

We use shrubs near our homes to add beauty; most were originally wild. Some are planted close together to form hedges for privacy and as a windbreaker, others grow better in the shade because they came from under large trees.
The best place depends on what you want them for. You want morning shade plant on the eastern side and so on.

they have all told u good advice so far but none of them told you whatever you plant it will grow best on the south side of your home as we are in the northern hemisphere now when you go to plant do yourself another favor and plant bushes shrubs hedges a minimum of 5 feet from your home this will allow for them to grow fully not just half way around with the back bare and will allso allow you to trim them or paint the house without bothering the other also when u plant use proper nutrition for your plants natural is allways best !

good info so far, but I always tell people to place their shrubs/trees (still in the pots they were purchased in) around to check the placement before planting. When the final layout is decided, move them another 5 or so feet away from the house. People always plant for immediate gratification and the tree/shrub almost always needs more room. Also, when planting trees, the top most root should be placed right at soil level. Then mulch around the trunk, but in a donut shape with less mulch at the trunk…..also, water long and deep.

Look up, too! Don’t plant a tall growing tree near a power line. With all the underground lines, wouldn’t hurt to check for that too, before you plant.
