getting rid of grass for new landscaping project?

January 3rd, 2006 by admin

pat w asked:

I am starting a new area for landscaping that is all grass. What is the best way to start so I have less problems later on with grass and weed growing through the landscape screen and the mulch?

I would spray with (round up) to kill the grass. Before you start your project– dig the dead grass up and remove it– then for about a month cover this area with black vinyl and make sure the ends are down by putting brick or something to hold the vinyl down. When no sun gets to the area for a month + you should have safely killed the weed and grass roots. This has worked for me. Good luck with your project.

You can rent a sod cutter for the day or weekend. It cuts the grass in neat rows that are more manageable to remove. It gets right past the root. You can rent them from a rental shop or a home improvement place, like Home Depot. Then put down your landscape fabric.

a cheaper and in my opinion a better landscape barrier is newspaper. lay the newspaper out over the cleared area about 3 pages thick and then put an inch or so of dirt over the top of it and it will keep the weeds from growing up through. it is also biodegradable and holds the moisture too. hope this helps. As far as getting rid of the grass try not to use round up as it sometimes stays in the soil and will kill anything else you plant.

It all depends on the size of the area, if it is larger then say 150 square feet then renting a sod lifter will be beneficial. But if your doing gardening and want to start now, dig it up us manula sod lifter, small flat shovels and or spade shovels. You will get a bit of dirt but thats ok cause you may add some compost or mulch anyhow bring the level back up. This gives the plant a new home free of any other growth. When i create a planting bed i dig it out. Also If you do not want to use wed fabric just purchase some preen lay it on as directed and add mulch after you plant. This is the easiest cleanest and quieckest way to a grass free bed. You may find yourself out there pulling a larger weed every once in a while becuase it was strong enough to get thorough your prevention but so what you pick 10 larger weeds in a year. Take care and have fun. Also if you do get some weed spotting/grass shoot it with the weed killer if its not right under one of your plants.
