BAPTIST asked:

A friend and I were wondering if we could begin in the field of landscaping before we “build up” to the attaining of a business licence.

I would not advertise yourselves as landscapers if you don’t have a diploma

Highly dependent upon local regulations. In my home state, landscape services are taxable and thus you must have a vendor’s license, at a minimum. The Dept. of Taxation is a mean group to work with as they take violations very seriously if you are caught.

You may also need licenses to apply pesticides and herbicides as a commercial enterprise.

In the State of Louisiana, US, you need a horticultural license or landscape contractor’s license before you put the first plant in the ground. You must pass a test to get either of those licenses. You must also have an occupational license so you can pay the proper taxes to the city. Not that everyone has one, but if you get caught without it, the punishment is a severe fine.

    Hi:
I am a landscaper and designer. I have had a business for over eight years. I have a business licience in both retail and wholesale. This is smart thing to do for tax purposes as well as gaining discounts for supplies and plant specimens. I would recommend to start building your clientele. Get your business going through word of mouth. Make up business cards and hand them out at nurseries and garden center. Get yourself established as a landscaper and then attain a business licience. This is how I started. It takes a lot of hard work but more importantly, keep your client satisfaction as your number one priority. Get excited about your work and that will reflect on your job performance as well as your clients being satisfied. You have to love what you are doing and have some knowledge in the field. Always be open to learning about new plant specimens, new techniques in different types of landscape projects. I hope this has helped some.

I will link you to the site map of my website, as this page has everything that is on the website. Browse through and see if you can find any other information that may be helpful to you. Good luck in starting your landscape business. Have a great day!
    Kimberly

Your local works dept. may be able to direct you in this regard. Local bylaws and licensing should be observed so you don’t get in over your head.

I’m a landscaper in minnesota, you don’t need no friggen license to trim tree’s & bushes, or shovel rock in a wheelbarrow. You don’t need any permits for anything, unless what you are building is attached to an already existing structure,(house or garage) You do need a license to apply chemical’s to a lawn. At the end of the year you pay 28% of your profits like everybody else.
