How do I go about getting a landscaping job?

April 2nd, 2006 by admin

Krista S asked:

I want to work outside this summer, but the places i’ve called don’t seem to want to hire a woman. I’m a hard worker and am willing to earn my keep. Any helpful hints on getting a landscaping job?

Try putting an ad in the paper, or on college employment sites. Elderly people don’t mind who they hire, as long as they’re willing to keep up their yard.

I worked for a few elderly couples already. They pay generously, and never discriminate on sex.

However, if you’re persistent on a landscaping job with a company, then I beg of you to be careful. I also did that, and had to quit within the week because the men on the crew were threatening me, and touching me. Find a friend to do it with you!

Best of luck, please be careful!

Well most landscaping companies have a tough time getting good reliable help as summer gets going and more people begin to think about how bad their yard or business’ landscaping looks. Naturally you shouldnt be discriminated against because you’re a girl BUT we all know it happens. Try this: Check the Yellow Pages under landscapers and look to see if any of them have a females name as an owner! You may even have an advantage here over the boys since she will know how hard it is for women to get into the field. Some companies use more minority-owned businesses so a savvy business woman will be sure her name is listed. Good Luck!
