How much should I budget for landscaping?

We’re coming close to finishing a home remodel and will need to landscape the front and back yards plus install a driveway. We’re in the San Jose, CA area. We’re not looking for a lot of hardscape, but will want a patio and then mostly grass with some bushes around the sides. I’m not looking for a quote, but would like to know a ballpark for what I should expect landscapers to quote me. Is this $1k? $5k? $10k?
More info…We have a 6700 sq ft lot with a single story 1300 sq ft house. The driveway goes down the right side of the lot to a standard 20×20 garage in the back right corner. We’d need irrigation and lighting and we’re undecided on bbq. How much extra should I expect to spend on a built in grill?

You should expect to spen 18-25% of the cost of the remodel for landscaping with drive and patio.

I would spend atleast 7k. It will define the outside of your house. Just make sure the design will still look good when the trees and bushes are mature. Good luck!

You didn’t say how many square feet you are working with but sod cost anywhere from .80 to $4. for about a 3ft by 1ft roll. and you built in sprinkler is going to cost about 3,000. Your patio depending if you are putting in a barbecue or not can very greatly.

The ONLA (the state landscaper’s association for my state) recommends setting aside 10% of the cost of the structure for landscaping. So, for example, if your remodeled home was worth 100K you would expect to pay around 10K for landscaping. If you are not landscaping your entire property you can use some sound judgement and shave some of that cost off.
