I have a landscaping question. Would like info about landscaping around my patio?

PsychoSam asked:
We just extended our patio last year and have a few things around it, like rose bushes, tulips and mums. We would like to plant a couple dogwood trees near the patio but we do not know if it is feasible to do this or not. I certainly do not want the patio tore up by roots from the trees down the road. Are dogwood trees compatibile with being close to a patio and also would it be better to shop for some dwarf dogwoods? What kind of ornamental trees are advisable around a patio?
Where can we get ideas on what other items to plant around a patio, such as shrubs etc. We were also thinking in the near future to put a little white wrough iron fence around the patio and landscaped area. Any websites I could look at for some good practical advice. Thanks for the answers.

I think dogwoods would be fine near the patio, but remember that dogwoods like to grow in the shade of other trees. Japanese Maple is a stunning choice as well, ornamental pear, crepe myrtle - all good. To help control the root issue, which I don’t think would be much anyway with small ornamental trees, consider planting them in in a circular raised bed contained with landscape block or whatever treatment you want.

THe first site is a site that lists some trees that are good for shelter, windbreaks, shade etc…
The second has an article half way down that lists two trees that you might like to check out.
Like all trees if they are planted to close the roots can and will move a patio over time. So placement is what you should be more concerened about. A faster growing tree that can provide good shade can be planted furthur away from the patio lessening the worry of roots. When you go and pick a tree talk to the arbourist on staff and they will be able to recommend trees that will fit your need, effect and budget. They can also answer your questions about small bushes. As for the flowers it will all depend on the amount of shade to full sun. Good luck!
