Rocks, they don’t need water, mowing or use up resources.

you havent stated what type of climate.how big did you want your garden.what type of garden.formal or informal.cottage garden or tropical garden,mediterranian or japanese.lots to consider isnt there.its not just a question of planting a plant.do you have pipes underground so this could effect if you want shadetrees.how big is your yard.which way does the sun go round your house.is it full sun or shade.the best way to get some basic designs is go to your local nursery.people there should be qualified to help you and the advice they give is free.when they show you the variety of plants to plant dont buy on the day.go back home and picture your back yard.remember they are also sales people and will try and sell you everything on the day.picture your yard as a fnished product.this means picturing your plants as mature plants.then you can incorperate structural things as well.like stones pots ornaments.
