We just extended our patio last year and have a few things around it, like rose bushes, tulips and mums. We would like to plant a couple dogwood trees near the patio but we do not know if it is feasible to do this or not. I certainly do not want the patio tore up by roots from the trees down the road. Are dogwood trees compatibile with being close to a patio and also would it be better to shop for some dwarf dogwoods? What kind of ornamental trees are advisable around a patio?
Where can we get ideas on what other items to plant around a patio, such as shrubs etc. We were also thinking in the near future to put a little white wrough iron fence around the patio and landscaped area. Any websites I could look at for some good practical advice. Thanks for the answers.

I have a ring of pond stones around a large rosebud tree. Probably 10-12 feet in diameter. I used that black “screen” looking stuff and made sure to have it thoroughly covered. I then laid a good layer of pond stone on top of it. Looks gorgeous, but each year, more & more grass breaks through that black stuff and sticks out through the rocks. Will Round Up kill the tree itself, or as long as I’m careful, will it be OK to take out the grass?

We just finished building a earth-sheltered home. Earth-sheltered home are homes built into the side of a south facing hillside. I plan on doing the landscaping myself to save money. So I need to do some looking into basic landscaping design. I’ve done the landscaping with my other homes that have had grass and few trees before, but never any thing from scratch. I do have big equipment experience. So that is not a problem for me.

i have a neighborhood landscaping business that i do and i need a good idea of what to charge for lawns. i used to charge $25 a cut, but with gas prices going up…. all of the yards i take care of are .5-.75 cleared acres. i charge $25/hr for any other jobs. sound reasonable?

i live in CT if that makes any difference.
